Like this woman, I own land on both sides of the CAD/US border. I have been treated equally as offensively by BOTH sides. [Canada has demanded my personal bank statements to see how much money I have in my accts. NO ONE'S F'ing business but my own.] Some of the comments by Canadians below the article state that CADS have no rights when they cross into the U.S. — absolutely NOT TRUE. The minute ANY foreigner steps onto U.S. soil they have the same Constitutional rights as that of an American citizen when it comes to civil liberties.
Here’s the problem. The Patriot Act suspended ALL 4th Amendment protections for EVERYONE. Whenever individuals cross the border their laptops, cell phones, Blackberries and ANY and ALL OTHER electronic devices HAVE BEEN and WILL be seized without cause. This has been going on for at least 5 years. The ACLU filed a lawsuit against US Customs / Border Patrol in order to have the practice stopped, but that suit is still pending and will likely fail due to the Patriot Act.
People are routinely detained by both sides and asked about their political, religious and social affiliations — a clear constitutional violation. I’m sure there’s a lot of strip searching taking place as well.

Ironically, the Patriot Act WAS NOT RENEWED yesterday [2/9/11] as it fell short of the 2/3 majority needed to pass. SO, for the next few weeks — until Feb.28th — when Republicans will AGAIN put this piece of fascist shit up for another vote, you technically have 2 weeks of having your civil liberties in tact. Enjoy it while you can. Diane Feinstein and others will not rest until the Patriot Act with every liberty-stripping facet is PERMANENT, with no ability to phase it out, amend it or repeal it.
