If you receive a phone call from an 855 area code number, don't answer it unless you want to be charged for the call. I recently learned by experience.
The following comes from the http://areacode.org/855 website:
"Area code 855 is a future area code reserved for toll-free calls in which the calling party is not charged. Instead, the telephone carrier charges the cost of the call to the called party. Toll-free numbers, such as 855 numbers, have applications such as technical support, customer service, and personal use."
In earlier years a party was always asked if they would accept a collect call: in other words, you were forewarned about what you were getting into and who would have to pay for the call. It appears those days are now long gone. We have now entered the time of "rape and pillage" in the communications industry. Now, you will have no warning before you are charged for some calls. Welcome to the jungle.
