Found on web- For a little whiter smile. (Portland)

When I turn on my water at my kitchen sink and pour it into a pitcher I notice the smell of bleach.

So smile a little whiter Portland knowing that the City of Portland adds, "BLEACH" "LYE" & "Ammonia" to your drinking water...

Fyi: "The lye is good for your pipes"

They claim the pipes need the lye added to the water to keep them clean.

Drinking Water Treatment
The first step in the treatment process for Portland's drinking water is disinfection
using chlorine. Next, ammonia is added to form chloramines which ensure that
disinfection remains adequate throughout the distribution system.
The Portland Water Bureau also adds sodium hydroxide ie: "LYE" to increase the pH of the
water to reduce corrosion of plumbing systems.
